What is the PFAN policy regarding conventional collective titles for compilations of works by one agent?
PFAN policy varies according to whether or not the compilations are complete, and according to the date of the compilations. The PFAN policy does not apply to legal works, as RDA no longer allows the use of conventional collective titles for them.
- For complete works, always use the conventional collective title Œuvre as the preferred title (RDA 6.2.2.10.1 and 6.14.2.8.1 for musical works).
- For complete works in a single form, one of the conventional collective titles prescribed by RDA or another appropriate conventional collective title must always be used as the preferred title (RDA 6.2.2.10.2 and 6.14.2.8.2-6.14.2.8.3 for musical works).
- For partial compilations of works, whether in a particular form or in different forms, the policy varies according to the date of the compilations.
- For partial compilations created before 1501, apply the RDA instructions as written. First determine whether 6.2.2.10 applies, and whether the compilation is identified by a title or form of title in the manifestations embodying that compilation or in the reference sources (e.g., Chaucer's collection of stories entitled The Canterbury tales). In this case, we identify the compilation by choosing a title according to the instructions in 6.2.2.5.
If 6.2.2.10 does not apply and it has been decided to apply the alternative under 6.2.2.10.3 allowing parts of a compilation to be identified collectively, a conventional collective title must be used.
- For partial compilations created after 1500, the policy is to apply 6.2.2.4, considering the title of the compilation to be “the title or form of title in the original language by which the work is commonly identified”. In this case, the alternative under 6.2.2.10.3 does not apply, and it is the title of the manifestation rather than a conventional collective title that is used to identify the compilation.
If the same compilation has been published more than once under different titles, choose the most common form of title (or the title of the original edition) as the preferred title, and record the other titles as variants.
Note that the policy for partial compilations created after 1500 does not apply to :- compilations of parts of the same work or excerpts from the same work
- compilations of musical works (RDA 6.14.2.8 must continue to be applied).
How do I apply the PFAN policy for partial compilations created after 1500 when it comes to translations?
Translations can fall into one of two categories, depending on whether or not the partial compilation has been published in the original language. If the translation of a partial compilation has been published as a compilation in the original language, the preferred title of the compilation will be that of the compilation in the original language. It is not necessary to carry out an exhaustive search to determine the title in the original language. This rule should only be applied if the title in the original language is readily available, bearing in mind that it is often very difficult to determine whether the compilation was even published in the original language.
If the translation of a partial compilation has not been published as a compilation in the original language, then the preferred title of the compilation will be the title proper of the translation (i.e. of the manifestation).
In case of doubt, use the title proper of the translation as the preferred title of the compilation.
What impact does the PFAN policy on conventional collective titles have on authority records in the case of partial compilations created after 1500?
If a partial compilation created after 1500 includes a manifestation title that is recorded as a variant access point in an existing authority record for a conventional collective title, there are two options for resolving the conflict:
- If the variant access point in the existing authority record for a conventional collective title represents the same resource as the one being described (verify this by examining the 670 field that justifies the variant access point), delete the variant access point and the corresponding 670 field and describe the resource according to RDA 6.2.2.4.
Since the conventional collective title authority record is likely to be an undifferentiated work authority record, the record should not be recoded as RDA if it is not already. This is an exception to PFAN's policy that any authority record that is not RDA-coded must be recoded as RDA when it is modified in any way.
If the record has not been evaluated and has no field 016, it is not necessary to evaluate it and add a unique Canadiana number. You can apply the procedure for partial modifications and add the generic number 1111X1111F.
Exception :
If the variant access point that conflicts is the only variant listed in the record, and the 670 field that justifies this variant is the only 670 field in the record, leave the record unchanged and mark it for deletion. - If the variant access point in the existing authority record for a conventional collective title does not represent the same resource as the one being described (for example, it may represent an earlier or later edition, or a completely different compilation of works), a 1XX/4XX conflict exists which must be resolved. A qualifier can be added to the conflicting 4XX. It is not necessary to recode the authority record as RDA if it is not already recoded. This is an exception to the PFAN policy that any authority record that is not RDA-coded must be recoded as RDA when it is modified in any way.
If the record has not been evaluated and has no 016 field, it is not necessary to evaluate it and add a unique Canadiana number. You can apply the procedure for partial modifications and add the generic number 1111X1111F.
Authority records can optionally be created if there is a conflict with another authorized access point in the “catalogue ”, i.e. the file in which searching and cataloging is carried out (e.g. the local catalogue, Canadiana, OCLC). Cataloguers can also take into account any resource with the same authorized access point and whose existence they are aware of, whether or not it appears in the catalogue. However, an authority record should not be created for the sole purpose of providing a variant access point comprising a conventional collective title. This would run counter to one of the policy objectives, which is to reduce the number of new authority records representing works.
