About Francophone Name Authority Program (PFAN)

Established in 2020 by Library and Archives Canada, Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec and 15 Quebec francophone libraries from the Partenariat des bibliothèques universitaires du Québec, the Francophone Name Authority Program (PFAN) is the programme by which participating institutions contribute to the Canadiana name authority file by supplying authority records for agents, places, works and expressions.

For more information about PFAN, please visit the Communications section or contact

General Principles [NEW]

  1. The Canadiana name authority file is hosted by OCLC.
  2. There is only one French authority file in WMS, Canadiana.
  3. Contributions of authority records in the Canadiana file by participants of the program must be performed using the WorldShare Record Manager service using the WMS platform.
  4. The governance of the program is ensured by a Steering Committee, and the standards and practices are stipulated by the Standards Committee.
  5. The PFAN standards and practices guide the creation of authorities and are based on those created by NACO. These are available in French. Libraries participating in the program commit to following the rules for contributions devised by the Standards Committee
  6. Participating libraries are responsible for training their staff and could be called upon to validate the quality of authority records contributed by other member libraries.
  7. PFAN is open to all French-language partners.
  8. This file is created collaboratively and the authority records must be provider neutral.
  9. A new partner cannot load authority records from their local file even if these are unique.

PFAN Discussion List

About the Discussion List

PFAN-L is a bilingual discussion list established by the Programme francophone des autorités de noms (PFAN) to participating libraries.

List participants are encouraged to use the list to:

  • provide information of interest to PFAN participating libraries;
  • ask questions and propose solutions to other PFAN libraries.

You may use the listserv web interface to configure your user profile, to use basic listserv commands and to search discussion list archives. Please visit:

For questions and concerns relating to the list, please contact:

List Commands

To send a message to all of the people currently subscribed to the list, just send mail to PFAN-L@LISTSERV.LAC-BAC.GC.CA, which is called the list address. You must never try to send  any command to that  address, as it would be distributed to all the  people who have subscribed. All commands must be  sent to  LISTSERV@LISTSERV.LAC-BAC.GC.CA, which is  the LISTSERV address. It is important to understand the difference between the two.

You may leave the list at any  time by sending a "SIGNOFF PFAN-L" command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.LAC-BAC.GC.CA.  You can also tell LISTSERV  how you want it to confirm the receipt of  messages you send to the list. To send yourself a copy of your own  messages, send a "SET PFAN-L REPRO" command.

Alternatively, to have LISTSERV send  you a short acknowledgement instead of the entire message, send a  "SET PFAN-L ACK NOREPRO" command. Finally, you can turn  off acknowledgements completely with the  "SET PFAN-L NOACK NOREPRO" command.

PFAN-L uses a UNIX-based LISTSERV software. Information about advanced commands for LISTSERV can be retrieved by sending the following message:

All commands to LISTSERV should be in the body of the message. Since the software is English, all commands to LISTSERV must be in English.

  • To remove your name from the list.

  • To obtain information about PFAN-L.

  • This will stop sending you PFAN-L postings until your reset your status - please use this when you go on holidays or will not be taking email regularly.

  • This will reset your status and allow you to begin receiving messages from the list.

  • To receive a message per day that contains all the daily postings to PFAN-L.

  • To get a copy of a message that you post to PFAN-L.

  • To NOT receive a copy of what you post to PFAN-L (this is the default).

  • To obtain a list of commands.

  • To obtain an index of what has been posted to PFAN-L.

  • To get information about a list including subscribers.

  • To conceal your name from anyone using the REVIEW command.
