Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) is recognized as being a leader on advancing reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples by actively promoting the recruitment, retention and advancement of Indigenous employees across the Department, and being responsive to the unique needs of Indigenous public servants.
Reconciliation at ESDC
The Government of Canada is working together with Indigenous Peoples to build a nation-to-nation, Inuit-Crown, government-to-government relationship based on respect, partnership and recognition of rights.
Indigenous Recruitment, Retention and Advancement (IRRA) Team
IRRA provides a leadership role in advancing Reconciliation by developing tools and adapting processes to help Indigenous employees feel engaged and confident that they are working for an employer of their choice.
The approach to Indigenous recruitment at ESDC is rooted within the Many Voices One Mind: A Pathway to Reconciliation report. This is a whole-of-government strategy that seeks to reduce and remove barriers to Public Service employment encountered by Indigenous Peoples; and capitalize on the diversity of experience and ideas that Indigenous Peoples bring to the Public Service.
The IRRA team applies a reconciliation lens to employment equity, supports and promotes cultural safety, and has a strong working relationship with internal and external partners.
Indigenous Employees’ Circle (IEC)
A culturally sensitive, inclusive and representative work environment that supports ESDC and Government of Canada priorities. The IEC is the network for First Nations, Métis and Inuit employees of the Department. The network also welcomes allies who support a positive and inclusive workplace for Indigenous employees.
The IEC's National Council works to:
- Create a comfortable sense of community for Indigenous employees;
- Promote awareness of Indigenous cultures; and
- Provide a forum for departmental consultation on issues and policies that impact First Nations, Inuit and Métis employees.
