Importance of networking during your work term​	During your student contract - Employment - Tips and Tricks​ Once you have been hired for a student job, you can be re-hired easily.​ After your studies - Employment - Tips and Tricks​ Students are eligible for student bridging (conditions apply). This is a non-advertised appointment (word of mouth) for a term or indeterminate position on any team!​ During your career​ Talk about your career interests and keep in touch with your colleagues! It's a small world and some job opportunities are not posted.​
Means of networking​	Take advantage of every networking opportunity to introduce yourself, you never know when you might run into that person again!​ What we recommend doing...​ Use the  MS Teams chat to engagne in conversations with fellow students and colleagues. GCconnex and GCxchange are great ways to network during your student contract, but once your contract is over, you will lose all your connections.​ LinkedIn is an excellent professional tool for making connections and building your network.​ Twitter is another great platform to stay informed and involved in the conversation even when your student contract is up.​
Networking effectively	Look for professional and social opportunities​ Participate in the meetings!​ Plan ahead of time​ Research the events or people you will be meeting!​ Leave a positive impression ​ Open your camera, smile, participate, ask questions and write in the chat!​ Follow up and maintain your network​ Add people you have met on professional platforms (LinkedIn)​ Are there people who inspire you? Would you like to work in their team? Write to them!​
Writing effective emails for networking	Use a catchy title for your email. ​ Write the person's name (e.g.: Hello Julie).​ Try to build a connection with the person before asking them for anything (e.g.: I could see from your LinkedIn profile that you also went to school X.).​ Write your email after a meeting and mention it (ex: I attended X meeting today).​ Ask to schedule a meeting with the person to discuss Tip: Start a conversation and find things in common with the person, don't ask for a job right away. ​ Tip: Learn about cold emailing techniques to communicate with someone for the first time. Improve your solicitation technique and learn from your communication mistakes. ​ Keep it brief!​ "Compliment" the person (ex: I loved your presentation on networking! That would be very helpful!).​ Networking is an art! Learn from your mistakes and try to improve for next time!​
Find hiring managers​	Look at the contacts under the job posting on GC Jobs​ Sign up for Facebook groups (GC Students page) and connect with people in the group​ Look on the Career Maketplace on GCconnex. Visit GCdirectory and do research for your field of interest​ Use keywords, search the departments and branches that interest you.
