== '''A Look Back: A Year of the GC Remote Worker Wiki''' ==
The holidays are around the corner and, like everything in 2020, they are going to be different this year. By using our work tools, we can still celebrate this special time of year.
+
Since May, 2020 the Shared Services Canada Technology Showcase team has been working in full pivot mode to deliver content relevant to GC technology users. Unable to deliver our planned in-person information sessions, we created the GC Worker Wiki to curate and share information available from across the GC.  Our focus? Remote working. As the GC workforce nationwide adapted quickly to remote working, there was much to learn.

Virtual team building is important. It helps to combat the stress, loneliness and challenges some of us may feel. Working virtually can also lead to disengagement and poor performance. Virtual team building can help form social bonds and build trust which improves communications and helps teams work together.
+
A year later, our Remote Working wiki has had more than 5, 434 views. We have created and shared 14 different posts and each post is viewed an average of 120 times.

In fact, 94 percent of workers in one survey say mutual respect and connection are critical to their team’s success, and 19 percent say it’s the number one factor in their sense of well-being at work.
+
Our very first post was on audio video conferencing back on May 6th – which offered tips to fully leverage audio and video conferencing tools. Essentially, audio and video conferencing was out path to re-creating the in person connections we were used to.

Here are some ideas to help you create a virtual holiday event for your team:
+
Flash forward 14 months and our last post focused on a deeper dive into using Teams and Microsoft 365. In fact, we did three posts on M365 alone!

'''Holiday Icebreaker Questions:'''
+
Our most viewed post? Information Management last June. We all needed an important reminder about correctly storing and sharing our business information when working remotely.
*What’s your least favorite – Christmas song?

*What's the best – or worst –present you've ever received?

*Describe a present you wanted badly as a kid, but never received.

*Name something about the holidays that most people like, but you hate (or at least dislike).

*If you could only have one type of holiday food this year, what would you choose?

'''Virtual Holiday Bingo'''
+
Over the past 14 months we have covered topics from mental health, to team building to highlighting the best of GC social media. We have partnered with Communities of Practice – the M365 CoP and the GC Flex group and worked closely with the Canada School of Public Service. We have shared tips and support mechanisms for learning a second language when working remotely. And we have covered the depth and breadth of SSC’s accessibility support and tools program; which has become even more important while we are away from the office.

Make up a holiday bingo card using a free holiday bingo card generator you can find online. They use images like snowflakes, candy canes or holiday activities such as  baked cookies, skating, carol singing to create a bingo card. Distribute the cards, print, and lead a virtual bingo game.
+
If you have not yet read through these posts, take a look back and learn something new to help you make the most of remote working.

'''Holiday Costume Dress-up'''
+
As the Technology Showcase team moves forward, we will be developing new wiki and other ideas to continue to bring you the best of SSC and GC supports for today’s digital worker, both virtually and eventually, in person. We are currently developing a Virtual InfoSession, product videos, and an interview series.

Some of us decorate our office space: think tiny fake Christmas trees, strings of lights and candy jars. Ask  your remote team to get in the holiday spirit by attending video parties in seasonal garb like Santa hats, elf costumes, reindeer antlers and green Grinch hair. Kick it up a notch with a costume contest prize.
+
'''We want to hear from you!''' We are always looking for new topics to cover. Reach out to share your ideas and suggestions by using  [[Mailto:ssc.gcremoteworkinggcrw-gctravailadistancegctd.spc@canada.ca|this email]].
Share Videos and Photos

Crate a shared photo drive in Teams or post pictures in your chat so remote employees can share decorations, homemade treats, ugly Christmas sweaters and other holiday fun. Make it a guessing game and have everyone on the team try to guess which image belongs to which person on the team.
+
<small>''July 2021''</small>

'''Friendly Competitions'''
+
<br>'''Topics:'''

Get everyone in the spirit by hosting competitions through video calls and shared photos. Challenge your team to come up with the ugliest Christmas sweater or the best home office decorations.

'''Acknowledge Employees'''

The holidays are a great time to give out end-of-year awards that recognize hard work and special accomplishments, or are simply good for a laugh. Get creative! All employees enjoy having their achievements recognized and celebrating memorable moments.

Fun Fact Guessing Game

Ask everyone on the team to submit a fun fact about themselves to you privately – you can even make it holiday related.  Then, hold a meeting with the whole team and read out the facts one by one and let everyone else guess which fact matches with which team member.

'''Collaborate on a Holiday Playlists'''

We all have a favourite holiday song. Create some needed variety with a virtual team playlist. Everyone contributes one song to build a playlist, team members can download songs from their own favourite music platform.

== Second Languages and Remote Working ==

Maintaining a second language is challenging when remote working. You are isolated from your colleagues and away from your normal work environment. It’s more challenging to practice.

Finding ways to learn or maintain a second language may be different now, but there are still ways the Government of Canada is supporting the effort.

'''Online Learning Resources'''

The Canada School of Public Service (CSPS) announced that all classroom courses onsite events and in person programs are suspended until further notice. To help reduce the spread of COVID-19, the CSPS has made available virtual events and online courses, including self paced required training and language maintenance tools.

The School offers free, online self-assessment tools, and online language learning including self-directed evaluation simulations and interactive tools designed to improve oral and written comprehension, pronunciation, grammar, written expression and fluency in the second official language.

Find out what is on offer here: [https://cepublic.myschool-monecole.ca/ct.asp?id=588B67D46F6D2FEFFB01F2E1A815DA4D22FE662395134602B5459457EDFDCAD4DE412900D4611D978810B352FE53C249DA08DCE111FC488A336B27B6B227D4B1&ct=4aeUsy0AAABCWmgzMUFZJlNZe1eFLAAADBmAAAOAEC%2flTMAgACGqaNqb1T9I1NP1QpkxMgyM9cl2LSMIvkPI1XV6Q%2bjeatI1ThsSj%2bLuSKcKEg9q8KWA Learning path for maintaining your second language]

'''Second Language Self Assessment'''

The Public Service Commission (PSC) also offers online self-assessment tests for written expression and reading comprehension so you can practice before you take official second language tests.

These tests give you an idea of the level (A, B or C) you might attain on the official test, provide unofficial results, are various lengths and duration and are available online.

'''Remote Language Testing'''

Human resources specialists and others can learn more about second language testing during Covid-19. The Public Service Commission developed online testing as a temporary measure to help departments staff bilingual positions while the situation related to COVID-19 is ongoing. This includes second language interview guides and test for written expression and reading comprehension.

'''Covid-19 Glossary in Two Languages'''

COVID-19 is a global situation and it requires vocabulary that is understood by everyone. In Canada, this means consistent terminology in both official languages. To make it easier, a glossary was created as a tool for language professionals and communicators where you will find terms from the fields of medicine, sociology and politics, among others.

Welcome to GC Remote Working

This new forum was created by experts at Shared Services Canada in an effort to help GC workers newly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic who find themselves working remotely.

This is an unprecedented situation; and one which is continually evolving. Remote workers need easy access to the latest information on the available tools and solutions as well as tips, best practices and updates.

Our aim with GC Remote Working is to gather the relevant remote working information in one place. We are only getting started. Our content is based on available information from all corners of the Government of Canada.

We plan to dive into topics such as security, information and document management, making “smart” use of your smart phone, using alternative tools and an introduction to Microsoft Office 365 and Teams.

Bookmark this page and check back often for more content as the situation evolves.

If you have tips and trick you would like to share, please send us an e-mail.

A Look Back: A Year of the GC Remote Worker Wiki

Since May, 2020 the Shared Services Canada Technology Showcase team has been working in full pivot mode to deliver content relevant to GC technology users. Unable to deliver our planned in-person information sessions, we created the GC Worker Wiki to curate and share information available from across the GC.  Our focus? Remote working. As the GC workforce nationwide adapted quickly to remote working, there was much to learn.

A year later, our Remote Working wiki has had more than 5, 434 views. We have created and shared 14 different posts and each post is viewed an average of 120 times.

Our very first post was on audio video conferencing back on May 6th – which offered tips to fully leverage audio and video conferencing tools. Essentially, audio and video conferencing was out path to re-creating the in person connections we were used to.

Flash forward 14 months and our last post focused on a deeper dive into using Teams and Microsoft 365. In fact, we did three posts on M365 alone!

Our most viewed post? Information Management last June. We all needed an important reminder about correctly storing and sharing our business information when working remotely.

If you have not yet read through these posts, take a look back and learn something new to help you make the most of remote working.

As the Technology Showcase team moves forward, we will be developing new wiki and other ideas to continue to bring you the best of SSC and GC supports for today’s digital worker, both virtually and eventually, in person. We are currently developing a Virtual InfoSession, product videos, and an interview series.

We want to hear from you! We are always looking for new topics to cover. Reach out to share your ideas and suggestions by using  [email].
