The 101 on the Digital Academy
 Kent Aitken / Partnerships & Engagement Lead / December 20, 2018
 2 minute read

We’re about to launch the first prototype of Canada’s Digital Academy, and wanted to provide an update and an invitation.

Our mission is to create a more digitally capable public sector, whether it’s as a workplace for employees, a service provider, a policy developer, or a social and economic steward. Here’s the end goal: Canada sets the worldwide bar for digital government and service.

The only way to make this happen is to work across organizational lines, levels and boundaries, so we’re designing a few options:

  • What might it look like for governments around the world to build up open
source tools that can meet the needs of our employees?
  • Could we adapt what’s already built in the open to get awesome, accessible
tools?
  • Could we understand our needs better and create better specs when we buy
tools?
  • What are the pros and cons of open source and proprietary solutions for
different use cases?

We Can't Do This Alone

We want to bring together the best learning and knowledge available. The subject matter is quickly evolving, and promising practices emerge constantly.

We need to take a partnership approach, creating space to bring in experts and mentors from government, academia, and the private and social sectors. If you’re interested in partnering, you’ll need a laser focus on the public good and love working in the open. We will share all of the research and resources we create or collect back out publicly.

We also need partners to see themselves as one puzzle piece of many. We’re looking for learning and training solutions that build on the basics, as well as deep dives into topics. Our draft topic map outlines the streams and practices we want to deliver to learners.

For learners

The call for nominations for our beta cohorts went out to departments on December 18 with a deadline of January 11. We’ll be looking for creative and open-minded public servants across multiple disciplines and levels. Stay tuned for more!
