What's new in the CRI?

October 2022 – New Regulators’ Capacity Fund Lessons Learned Report now available!

From 2020-2022, the CRI supported twenty-six initiatives from twelve departments and agencies through the Regulators’ Capacity Fund.  To learn from the project leads about their challenges, opportunities and successes, the CRI held a Lessons Learned Workshop in August 2022.  The information gathered during that session was captured in this RCF Lessons Learned Report.   If you are interested in applying to the Regulators’ Capacity Fund, this report will provide you with some key takeaways!  

September 2022 - The Regulators' Capacity Fund (RCF) has been renewed with funding of $6.2M over three years (2022-2025) to further support regulators. The renewed fund has expanded to include projects that support post-pandemic resiliency/recovery efforts.  The CRI is now accepting RCF applications for this fiscal year! About the CRI
Based on recommendations from the Economic Strategy Tables aimed at improving the regulatory environment for business – including the need for greater exploration and use of sandboxes and pilots to ensure the regulatory system keeps pace with advances in technology – the 2018 Fall Economic Statement announced that the Government would create a Centre for Regulatory Innovation (CRI).

Mandate
The CRI:

1. supports regulatory experimentation that promotes innovation and regulatory competitiveness in Canada;
2. helps regulators understand and respond to challenges associated with technological change; and,
3. supports industry in bringing applications of new and emerging technologies into the Canadian marketplace.

Governance
The CRI is situated in the Treasury Board Secretariat’s Regulatory Affairs Sector, reporting to the Executive Director of the Regulatory Cooperation Directorate.

The Centre’s overall operations are governed by an interdepartmental Director General Steering Committee, comprised of representatives from:

• TBS (chair);
• Privy Council Office;
• Innovation, Science, and Economic Development;
• Transport Canada;
• Environment and Climate Change Canada;
• Health Canada; and,
• Community of Federal Regulators.
