The automotive and transportation sectors are being shaped by transformative technologies with opportunities for innovation, job creation, investment attraction and growth. They also bring new challenges, including safety, privacy, cyber security, ethics, liability, infrastructure, and labour market impacts.	Governments will play a leadership role in ensuring readiness for automated and connected vehicles, including: supporting their safe deployment on public roads improving road and public safety increasing transportation efficiency and mobility fostering economic opportunities for Canada ensuring personal information privacy and cyber security spurring innovation

Partially-automated vehicles – for example with lane-keeping assistance or adaptive cruise control – are available now, and there is a wide range of opinions on when fully automated vehicles will be commercially available. How many cars are on the road? In 2016, more than 24.2 million vehicles were registered in Canada: 92.3% were vehicles weighing less than 4,500 kilograms, mainly passenger automobiles, pickups, Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) and minivans; 4.3% were medium and heavy trucks weighing 4,500 kilograms or more; and 3.3% were other vehicles such as buses, motorcycles and mopeds.
