Second Official Language Learning Opportunity Official Languages Discussion Circles (OLDC) REGISTER TODAY What it is The Official Languages Discussion Circles is an initiative developed by the GC Students network to give students working in the Government of Canada opportunities to develop the skills in their second official language. Discussion circles will offer six moderated weekly sessions for students to network with colleagues across departments while practicing their language skills in a safe and informal setting. The initiative will take place from July 3, 2023, to August 12, 2023. Who can participate Students currently employed in the federal public service through FSWEP, CO-OP, RAP or other student employment programs are welcome to participate. Participants at any level, whether beginner, intermediate or advanced can take part in the circles. One must be ready to actively discuss with others of their level to participate in the circles. How it works Official Languages Discussion Circles will run for one hour each week for a period of six weeks. Each week, participants will engage in informal discussions on predetermined topics while learning about the various components of official languages in the federal public service. The following table presents the weekly schedule and the expected discussion topics: Week Topic July 3–7 Why official languages matter July 10–14 What challenges do you face with official languages in your work July 17–21 Overcoming linguistic insecurity July 24–28 Your languages rights and obligations July 31 - August 4 Your career and professional goals August 6–12 How to maintain proficiency in official languages The circles will be held virtually on Zoom or MS Teams. Participants will receive a learning plan in advance to prepare for weekly discussions. To keep the conversation fluid and interactive, groups will be led by a moderator. The moderators will lead discussions and ask questions. They will also be there to help participants should they need it Students who successfully attend all six sessions of the discussion circles will be awarded a certificate of completion. • Assessment of official languages in the appointment process - Canada.ca
  • The official languages are English and French.
    • Some positions require you to be bilingual in English and French
    • Assessment of your second language (Reading, Writing, Oral)
      • CBC (Reading: Advanced, Writing: Intermediate, Oral: Advanced)
      • BBB (Reading: Intermediate, Writing: Intermediate, Oral: Intermediate)
  • New Unsupervised Test of Reading Comprehension (Candidate Assessment Tool)
    • This is an unsupervised Internet test. You don’t need to be tested in person in a federal government office, but you must have access to a computer and an Internet connection. The 45-minute test has 25 questions. All questions are in a common workplace format, such as an email, and are about workplace-related topics, such as an upcoming meeting. For each question, you will be asked to read a text and then asked a question about the content. Below the text, you’ll see several possible answers to the question. Select the best option by clicking the button next to the answer you choose.
  • New Unsupervised Test of Written Expression (Candidate Assessment Tool)
    • This is an unsupervised Internet test. You don’t need to be tested in person in a federal government office, but you must have access to a computer and an Internet connection. The 45-minute test has 30 questions. All questions are in a common workplace format, such as an email, and are about workplace-related topics, such as an upcoming meeting. For each question, you will be provided a text in which a word is missing and below you will see several options to fill in the blank. Select the best option to complete the sentence or short paragraph by clicking the button next to the answer of your choice.
  • Self-assessment tests: Try the self-assessment tests for reading comprehension and written expression before taking the official tests.
    • Note: The languages of the position must be met at the time of appointment.
    • X: Performance does not meet the minimum requirements
    • A: Beginner level
    • B: Intermediate level
    • C: Advanced level
    • E: Exemption (you can't get a E in the Unsupervised Test of Written Expression and Unsupervised Test of Reading Comprehension)
  • Managers can chose if they want the candidate to complete the test in person or unsupervised using the Candidate Assessment Tool.
  • If you have passed the official assessments, you can submit a request with the following link to receive proof of your levels.

  • Listen to films and programs in the second language with subtitles in the second language.
