Change Management 101 -- Genesis

As part of expanded programming, the Interdepartmental Organizational Change Network's (IOCN), Change Management Community of Practice Leadership Team, committed to development of a change management 101 learning offering.

Certified change practitioners from various government departments worked with the initiative manager and the leadership team to develop the 60-minute offering, meant to provide supplemental or interim change management training. It does not replace formal training.

The design intent was to provide an easy-to-understand view of how change impacts individuals, along with quickly adoptable tips on coping with change. The offering included information such as: what is CM; change vs transition; normal reactions to change; how to go about dealing with change; and an overview of systematic change management models (e.g. PROSCI). It was also designed to be interactive and therefore delivered live via Webex.

On May 16, 2019, 32 participants from 14 federal government organizations took part in a focus test]] of the offering. They were provided with questions in advance and asked to keep them in mind during the Webex presentation. Their responses were captured using the Webex polling function. Detailed polling results are found in Annex A.

The offering aligns with many directives across government such as pursuit of good mental health, including emotional intelligence; and the Clerk’s Beyond 2020 initiative. It also supports statements one and two of the three IOCN value proposition statements:

  1. To increase individual public servants’ capacity to leverage Change Management and Organization Development techniques
  2. To enhance public service leaders’ capacity to leverage change leadership tools and competencies
  3. To facilitate the exchange of change management / leadership expertise among change practitioners

Change Management 101 -- Event Team

In September 2019 the IOCN put a call out to scale up and train-the-trainer on the learning offering.

After simulations and product revisions, the Change Management 101 Event Team is in place and ready to go.

Our pilot launch of four sessions will occur the week of January 20, 2020, with the intention of week-long sessions, once per quarter!
