I am a black man with a non-visible hearing disability.

What motivated you to join the Lifting as you Lead Mentoring Circles program?

I wanted to add understanding and empathy into my leadership journey.

How do you envision your participation contributing to your professional growth?

I am much more inclusive and people oriented since participating in LLMC. I encourage and advocate for others, in rooms that they might not have access to.

What specific goals or aspirations do you hope to achieve through this experience?

I hope to have an impact on how work treats employees and colleagues. I want to be an inclusive leader. I hope to solidify a spot in the managent table of the CRA or public service at large.

Can you share a specific challenge or opportunity that led you to seek mentorship with the public service?

My challenge is that I have remained in technical position for more than 10 years. I felt that the time has come for me to lead.

Describe the impact you aim to make within your role through this program.

The impact is already evident. I want to show excellence and inspire others to forge their own path in change making and leading others into the future.

What has most inspired you in this journey of your professional development?

The amazing people I have met.

How do you believe mentorship and sponsorship can enhance your leadership skills in the public service?

Sponsorship is a new tool that I have not explored deeply. I have sponsors but I still need to master the "ask".

What unique strengths or perspectives do you bring to your circles that can benefit others?

Engagement and courage. I have to work on my listening skills which I believe will help everybody if this skill was available to them.

How can you apply what you learned from the Lifting as you Lead Mentoring Circles program to the workplace?

I have applied everything I have learned from this program. I have shared documents and perspectives with senior management at my organization.

What is the one message you would like to leave us with today?

Negotiate based on interests and not position. A hard mantra to follow but well worth it in the long run.
