Students Welcoming Event 2022

Start Your Career The Right Way

Description

The Federal Youth Network (FYN) would like to welcome new public servants to the GC. You've participated in your departmental onboarding and still have questions? FYN has you covered.

This half-day virtual event will help participants navigate their career in the GC. By the end of the session, participants will:

  • Be inspired by senior leaders talking about the importance of new professionals and their role in PS renewal
  • Re-envision the public service as one enterprise rather than many separate employers
  • Encouraging new employees to view their career as a 30 year journey in the entirety of the GC and to understand how to start that journey
  • Seize the opportunity to ask peers, managers, and HR professionals the questions that were not addressed in your departmental onboarding
  • Engage in discussions on the culture and future that young professionals can create in the GC, and help guide them to resources to better understand the value proposition of various departments and agencies through GC-wide reports and departmental reporting

  • Date and time: March 27, 2024 - 12:00 pm to 3:30 pm ET
  • Language: English (version française ici: Federal Youth Network/Accueil FRA/Événements/Bienvenue au GDC)
  • Location: This event will be delivered virtually on zoom
    • Please note:
      • Downloading Zoom to your computer is not necessary - you can view it on the web.
      • You can use your personal computer if the work computer does not allow you to view Zoom.

September 19, 2023 Learning Plans and Performance Agreements

You should be meeting with your direct supervisor at least twice a year to review your performance and personal goals. Your learning plan supports your performance by ensuring you have the skills you need to do your current role and prepare for the next one. More than signing the paperwork, you need to have the discussion about where you are and your intentions moving forward. Come with your questions on learning plans and performance appraisals.

October 17, 2023 Staffing and HR

You have a job in the GC so everyone around you assumes you understand the process but that’s not necessarily the case. Moving within the public service can happen through a variety of processes and mechanisms that many individuals don’t know about. Come ask our panel about hiring, job mobility, and other HR-related topics.

November 14, 2023 Networking and GC Communities

You have likely heard FYN say that Networking is the key to career development. When you sit alone at home or at an office, it can be hard to meet people and build relationships. Ask our speakers where they meet people, how they approach colleagues virtually, and which communities you can join to bring the best of yourself to work.
