FYN In Person Learning Days: NCR Event

Description

The Federal Youth Network (FYN) will be hosting an in-person learning event in the NCR in partnership with the NCRYPN. This full-day event will allow participants to learn about career development with tangible examples and experience sharing on a variety of topics. There will also be ample opportunities built in for networking and kiosk exploration.

The Federal Youth Network (FYN) will be hosting an in-person learning event in the NCR in partnership with the NCRYPN. This full-day event will allow participants to learn about career development with tangible examples and experience sharing on a variety of topics. There will also be ample opportunities built in for networking and kiosk exploration.

  • When: February 13th, 2023
  • Where: 111 Sussex Dr, Ottawa, ON K1N 1J1
  • Time: 8:30 am to 4 pm ET
  • Note: In keeping with the Career Boot Camp theme of your career your way, participants will choose their workshops upon arrival to tailor their day to their interests.


Learning Objectives:

  • Identify key factors in making an appealing resume
  • Share the importance of a network and how to network across the GC from anywhere
  • Continue to connect with individuals from their region and build on new relationships
  • Recommend activities and best practices to enhance organizational culture while working remotely or in a hybrid model


Session Outlines:

Guided networking to take place in every room for opening

Description: Participants will start the learning day in 1 of 4 different rooms. Each room will have a guided networking activity to get the audience warmed up to the idea of networking throughout the day.


Objectives: During this activity participants will:

  • Reflect on what is important to convey to another public servant when meeting for the first time
  • Practice introducing themselves to their peers in a safe space
Branding: Setting Yourself Apart

Description: Having the right skills and experience is part of the equation but sometimes you need to make sure the right person knows what you can bring to a potential role. Join our speakers as they discuss learning about yourself, expressing what you can contribute, and finding opportunities to meet the people who can help you advance in your career.


Objectives: During this activity participants will:

  • Reflect on what unique skill/experience/attitude they have to contribute to the public service
  • Associate how their unique contribution supports current GoC priorities
  • Identify places they can engage with hiring managers

FlexGC: Organizational Culture in a Hybrid Model

Description: Exploring activities and best practices to enhance organizational culture while working remotely or in a hybrid model


Objectives: During this activity participants will:

  • Explore who FlexGC is and the resources they offer
  • Discuss the importance  of good organizational culture
  • Share tips for growing your network from anywhere
  • Experiment with a tool for enhanced team connection

Ask Us Anything: Career and HR Panel Discussion

Description: As a new professional, there is a lot to learn and there are HR questions you may not feel comfortable to ask your manager regarding your personal career development and advancement.


Objectives: During this session, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions to a panel of peers, managers, and experienced HR professionals.

Exploring Resumes and Tips on Standing Out

Description: The landscape of hiring in the GoC is constantly changing and the pandemic accelerated that change. Learn why having 2 different types of resumes can help you gain a competitive advantage when searching for roles and what key aspects will help to get your resume in front of the right people.


Objectives: During this activity participants will:

  • Identify key factors in making an appealing resume
  • Relate current government priorities to your experience and achievements
  • Customize your resume to show your whole self
  • Target managers and audiences by sharing your resume on various social media platforms

Using Your Voice for Change

Description: As public servants, we have a responsibility to create and maintain the public service that we want to work in. Hear from GoC change-makers how they were able to find their voice and impact change in the GoC.


Objectives: During this activity participants will:

  • Hear stories of public servants who are passionate about making positive changes in the GoC
  • Learn where they can integrate themselves to have an influence on the future of the GoC
  • Leave feeling empowered to make the changes that they are passionate about

Speed Mentoring - in-person

Description: Our most popular session, speed mentoring, connects public servants of all levels with knowledgeable and insightful GC leaders for networking and mentoring.


Objectives: During this session, mentors will get an opportunity to share their advice with and answer questions from mentees related to career development, work-life balance, and the inner workings of the Government of Canada. Mentees will be able to ask questions to and seek advice from mentors on the topics that matter most to them as they advance their careers.
