CSPS Tech Lab Projects

The CSPS Tech Lab works on a variety of innovation projects to support the modernization of learning across the School and the GC. Take a look at some of our projects...

3D DESKTOP IMMERSIVE TECHNOLOGY PROJECTS

vExpo Virtual Event Platform

vExpo is the CSPS virtual event platform, developed in-house, to enhance participants’ experience during virtual or hybrid conferences. vExpo provides event participants with access to all event information from one central location, while making it engaging and easy to use. Participants can navigate a virtual lobby and browse through the event material, live presentations, and an exhibit area that showcases virtual kiosks where event partners can promote and share information on their products and services.

Our Knowledge Base will guide event hosts and kiosk owners through the creation of a vExpo Event and kiosk. It provides step-by-step instructions that allow for a seamless and effortless experience.

vKiosks

vKiosks are part of the vExpo suite or products. These virtual kiosks are developed to showcase and promote initiatives and projects offered by various entities across the GC.

They can be used during virtual event exhibit halls through the vExpo platform, or as a stand-alone kiosks as part of your Web presence and promotional packages.

vBuilder

To help with the creation of virtual events, the Tech Lab developed the vBuilder self-serve tool for the vExpo platform, which allows users to create a lobby and virtual kiosks from beginning to end. The vBuilder is accessible to CSPS employees responsible for the management of online events, and GC employees who have been assigned by their organization to manage a virtual kiosk for a virtual event making use of vExpo.

CSPS Workplace

A virtual space developed in collaboration with CSPS Accommodations to showcase the newly renovated workplace. CSPS Workplace helps employees acclimate to their modernized activity-based workplace through a digitally guided tour of the office space that features an immersive, engaging, interactive experience, as well as gamification elements.

The project supports employee onboarding and change management for those returning to the office, providing employees with information about the CSPS workplace, such as the code of conduct, working zones, hygiene measures, and new design standards.

This tool helps reduce potential concerns from employees and prepares them for a successful in-person experience as they learn about the changes taking place in CSPS locations across the country.

As this project progresses, Tech Lab continues to look for other ways to deploy the virtual space for other needs at the School, including for learning content. In parallel to developing this desktop 3D experience, Tech Lab also used the 3D environment to deploy this virtual space to VR headsets to test the implementation and demonstrate the use of VR to support different initiatives.

ESDC Workplace & You

ESDC Workplace & You is a virtual space designed in partnership with ESDC to help acclimate employees to their department’s modernization activity-based workplace. This digitally guided tour allows employees to navigate a modernized office space with a lobby, kiosks and 3D floor plan, each holding information and links to key resources.

ENHANCED LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Digital Game Based Learning - Project Apollo

Project Apollo is an initiative to assess the potential effectiveness of Digital Game-Based Learning (DGBL) as an educational approach for the adoption of positive environmental health behaviors in youth. The Tech Lab team at CSPS is collaborating with Health Canada (HC) to design and develop a web-based computer prototype to determine if DGBL is an effective method for influencing positive behavior change in youth.

This project is currently in development. Stay tuned for more information on the results from this project in 2024-25.

Virtual Reality Experimentation

For an organization like CSPS, virtual reality (VR) has the potential to bring learning to the next level.

This technology offers learners the possibility to experiment situations where they can learn but also apply their knowledge. For example, VR can provide opportunities to experiment simulated immersive situations where soft skills can be applied (e.g., being an actor in a harassment situation or being immerse into history). VR can also simulate situations that would otherwise be to difficult or too dangerous to recreate in real life (e.g., managing emergency situations).

The Tech Lab is experimenting with the use of VR for learning, and identifying the right use cases to pilot, including virtual space exploration as part of the natural progression of our work on the vExpo and virtual space projects mentioned above. Stay tuned for updates on our work with VR!
