Language Portal of Canada Inclusive Writing Guidelines and Resources for the English Language

Do you want to write inclusively in English? Do you want to know the principles and practices of inclusive writing that will allow you to do so? The Language Portal of Canada will present an overview of the Inclusive Writing Guidelines and Resources, which were recently published on the Portal.

These guidelines are designed to help the federal public service and other interested institutions in adopting writing that does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, ethnicity, ability or any other identity factor. They present principles for writing inclusively and concrete procedures to choose from depending on the context. Other new features include the Inclusionary and its French counterpart, l’Inclusionnaire, which allow you to find inclusive solutions to replace gendered words that refer to or describe people.

The guidelines and solutions repository were prepared by the Interdepartmental Working Group on Inclusive Writing, co-chaired by Public Services and Procurement (represented by the Translation Bureau), Women and Gender Equality Canada and Canadian Heritage. These resources have been the subject of extensive consultation, including with equity, diversity and inclusion networks and language and communications experts.
