Opening the Door to Mental Health Symposium 2024 - Nurturing Humanity in the Workplace

This year’s Opening the Door to Mental Health virtual symposium taking place on February 27 and 28, 2024 and is focused on mental health and wellness. This is the sixth year for this event, which is sponsored by the British Columbia Federal Council (BCFC) and organized by the BCFC’s Community of Interest on Mental Health. The theme for this year’s symposium is “Nurturing Humanity in the Workplace: Fostering a Culture of Kindness, Respect and Empathy.” The program will cover two half-days and include a range of speakers and panels providing their advice, different perspectives and strategies related to mental health, including how we can all focus on kindness, respect, empathy while building psychological safety in the workplace. By prioritizing humanity we empower ourselves and others, extend care to colleagues, reach out and offer support, and listen with an open mind.

Day One opens with a thought-provoking discussion by Dale Allen (Conscious Lead) drawing on her background as a non-violent Communication Practitioner and the importance of empathetic communication and work-life relationships in promoting well-being. Discussions will follow with perspectives on developing a people-first approach to mental health action plans and strategies, to holistic approaches to wellness including mindfulness, movement, nutrition, and more.

Day Two opens with Pierre Battah, who wrote the book (literally!) on Humanity at Work, Leading for Better Relationships and Results. Discussions follow on workplace foundation of empathy and respect, including Indigenous wellness practices and powerful lived experience stories.

Learning and engaging in dialogue about mental health is a key part of our development—both as public servants and as people. Regardless of our roles in the organization, learning about mental health and psychological safety enables us to create safer and more inclusive workplaces. It also helps us support ourselves and one another through challenging times. Supporting mental health in the workplace requires both the knowledge (i.e. of what works for you and your colleagues), and practice (i.e. dedicating the time and effort to take action). This year’s symposium will cover both knowledge and practice, including from an individual and a broader organizational perspective.

Symposium « Ouvrir la porte à la santé mentale 2024 - Nourrir l’humanité en milieu de travail »

Le symposium virtuel « Ouvrir la porte à la santé mentale » de cette année qui a eu lieu les 27 et 28 février 2024 se portait sur la santé mentale et le bien-être. Ce fut la sixième année de cet événement, parrainé par le Conseil fédéral de la Colombie-Britannique (CFCB) et organisé par la communauté d’intérêt sur la santé mentale du CFCB. Le thème du symposium de cette année : « Nourrir l’humanité sur le lieu de travail : favoriser une culture de gentillesse, de respect et d’empathie ». Le programme était sur deux demi-journées et comprenait une gamme de conférenciers et de panels offrant leurs conseils. Ils ont également offerts différentes perspectives et stratégies liées à la santé mentale, y compris la façon dont nous pouvons tous nous concentrer sur la gentillesse, le respect et l’empathie tout en renforçant la sécurité psychologique au travail. En priorisant l’humanité, nous nous responsabilisons nous-mêmes et les autres, accordons une attention particulière à nos collègues, tendons la main pour offrir notre soutien, et écoutons avec un esprit ouvert.

Jour 1 a débuté avec une discussion stimulante de Dale Allen (Conscious Lead – anglais seulement), s’appuyant sur son expérience de praticien de la communication non violente et sur l’importance de la communication empathique et des relations travail-vie personnelle dans la promotion du bien-être. Des discussions ont suivi avec des perspectives pour développer une approche axée sur les personnes et des plans d’action et stratégies en matière de santé mentale, ainsi que des approches holistiques du bien-être incluant la pleine conscience, le mouvement, la nutrition, etc.

Jour 2 a débuté avec Pierre Battah, qui a écrit le livre (littéralement !) « Humanity at Work, Leading for Better Relationships and Results » (anglais seulement). Des discussions ont suivis sur les fondements de l’empathie et du respect en milieu de travail, y compris des pratiques de bien-être autochtones et des récits d’expériences vécues marquantes.

Apprendre et engager un dialogue sur la santé mentale est un élément clé de notre développement, en tant que fonctionnaires et en tant qu’individu. Quel que soit notre rôle au sein de l’organisation, l’apprentissage de la santé mentale et de la sécurité psychologique nous permet de créer des lieux de travail plus sûrs et plus inclusifs. Cela nous aide également à nous soutenir nous-mêmes et les uns les autres dans les moments difficiles. Soutenir la santé mentale au travail nécessite à la fois des connaissances (c’est-à-dire ce qui fonctionne pour vous et vos collègues) et de la pratique (c’est-à-dire consacrer du temps et des efforts pour agir). Le symposium de cette année couvrait à la fois les connaissances et la pratique, notamment d’un point de vue individuel et organisationnel plus large.
