This message is to announce the implementation of [https://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd788.html MARC21 field 788] in newly created or updated bibliographic records at Library and Archives Canada, effective January 30, 2026. This new field supports the recording of parallel relationships between English and French records and enhances discovery and user requesting in Aurora.
What is MARC 21 Field 788?
Field 788 was introduced into MARC21 in 2022. It is designed to provide a standard approach to recording parallel relationships between records that represent the same resource but that are catalogued in different languages. This field can be viewed in Aurora.
How Do We Use Field 788 in Records?
Use WMS Record Manager “Insert from Cited Record” feature to populate the subfield values in field 788, including:
$a Main Entry Heading
$b Edition
$d Place, publisher, and date of publication
$e Language of cataloging
$s Uniform title
$t Title
$x International Standard Serial Number
$w Record control number (OCN)
Use WMS Record Manager “Insert Text String” feature to add subfield $i (Relationship information), and $5 (Institution to which the field applies) in field 788. Add subfield $n (Note) when applicable to direct users to the parallel record with holding details. Record 788 subfield $i, and subfield $n following the standard text strings; Record 788 subfield $5 using LAC’s MARC Organization code.
