From Feedback to Action: Using Your Input to Drive Change

Thank you to the 573 managers who responded to our May poll question! We asked:

a) On a scale of 1 to 5, how effectively does your work environment support your ability to lead and manage your team?

b) What specific changes would improve your effectiveness as a manager, supervisor, or team lead?

The average rating was 2.94. While some feel well supported, 68% rated their environment as moderately effective or less, and only 8% said it was “very effective.”

Your comments were clear and thoughtful. You called for more authority in staffing and decision-making, better support from internal services, more manageable workloads, improved hybrid workplace infrastructure, and practical training. Many of you also highlighted the need for more transparent communication and stronger recognition of the realities managers face.

What’s next?

The NMC will continue to share your insights with senior leaders, relevant programs and networks. Each month, we’ll ask one or two short questions to better understand your reality as a manager. Your responses are anonymous and help us shape programming, tools, and guide national conversations with our advisory boards, committees and partners that reflect what matters most for managers.

The Role of Managers Throughout the Procurement Process

The federal procurement process is designed so that the purchase of goods and services is done fairly, openly and transparently.

This informative event will highlight the roles and responsibilities of public service managers throughout the procurement process. It will also focus on the importance of collaboration between managers and other functional experts, as well as how to meet operational needs while adhering to policies and values and ethics principles.

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the federal procurement process, and the essential skills and resources needed to effectively manage their procurement-related responsibilities.

Support your Indigenous students and students with disabilities this summer, register them today!

Looking to provide tailored support activities for your Indigenous student or student with disabilities this summer?

The Indigenous Student Employment Opportunity (ISEO) and the Employment Opportunity for Students with Disabilities (EOSD) are employee-experience programs for students who identify as Indigenous or as having a disability and are completing a work term with the Government of Canada. These programs provide mentorship, networking and support services.


Make sure to register your student now – activities begin in early June.

New Course: Untangling Misinformation and Disinformation at Work

As stewards of public trust, public servants play an important role in supporting the integrity of Canada’s information ecosystem. As a companion to Untangling Misinformation and Disinformation, this CSPS course provides strategies to recognize, prepare for, and respond to misinformation and disinformation in the workplace. Participants will examine the importance of finding and sharing accurate information and how these strategies strengthen public trust.

Upcoming Leadership Programs for Black Public Servants – Expression of Interest Now Open

As part of the Action Plan for Black Public Servants, the Task Force on Black Public Servants is launching two new leadership development programs in partnership with the Canada School of Public Service:

  • Aspiring Directors Program for Black Leaders (ADP-BL) – for EX minus 1 level
  • Leadership Development Program for Black Supervisors and Managers (LDP-BSM) – for those with supervisory or managerial experience.

These culturally grounded, trauma-informed programs were co-developed with Black public servants to reflect lived experiences and build confidence, connection, and career growth.

Now more than ever, managers need free access to safe, supportive spaces to learn and solve real challenges together. This month, the NMC is promoting peer-based initiative the Co-development Groups (Québec Region only).

The group bring together managers from across departments, guided by trained facilitators, to support a peer through real-life work challenges. The initiative shares a foundation of confidentiality, respect, and collective learning but differ in their approach:

Register for the NMC Managers Connect event in Edmonton

The National Managers’ Community (NMC) is pleased to offer you a day of professional development and networking on June 24th in Edmonton.

The program includes a two-part coaching workshop for managers and supervisors facilitated by Susan Badame and Julie Wills, NMC Regional Leads, ICF Certified Coaches and Peer Coaching Circle Leaders.

Part 1 – Coaching Techniques to Move to Solutions: As managers and leaders, your team members look to you to address their workplace concerns and come up with concrete solutions for action. Join us for this focused session where we will introduce effective coaching techniques to help you and your team untangle workplace concerns and challenges constructively.

Part 2 – Peer Coaching for Effective Leadership: As managers, it can feel nearly impossible to find and make time for your own growth and learning. Join us for an insightful session where managers and leaders will experience firsthand the power of peer coaching circles. Through a live demonstration followed by hands-on practice, participants will engage in presenting real challenges they are facing.

In the afternoon, a panel of senior leaders will share their experiences and offer concrete perspectives relevant to the issues of today. Following this we will be presenting a session on Change Management with Chris Konski, Senior Regional Advisor, Change Management with PSPC. The only constant in our work is change. This presentation will touch on the skills needed and responsibilities leaders have in managing change in our organizations.
