Welcome to Greening Government

Greening Government within MAMD supports ISC and CIRNAC in implementing the Government of Canada’s Greening Government Strategy. The Government of Canada is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and strengthening climate resilience by 2035, while also reducing environmental impacts beyond carbon including waste, water, and biodiversity.

This page provides departmental policy instruments, guidance, and tools designed to support the implementation of the Greening Government Strategy and the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s Policy on Green Procurement. Together, these resources help guide sustainable practices, support the transition to low-carbon government operations, and promote responsible environmental stewardship across the Department.

Our Mandate

The Green Government sector is responsible for the implementation, oversight, and compliance related to the Greening Government Strategy, in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat’s Greening Government Strategy and other related federal policies and directives.

Our Key Activities

  • Implement the commitments under the Greening Government Strategy to achieve net-zero operations by 2050 and enhance climate resilience by 2035.
  • Reduce the environmental footprint of government real property and fleet operations by setting and meeting absolute greenhouse gas reduction targets.
  • Integrate sustainability principles and life-cycle management into procurement, operations, and service delivery through green procurement and responsible resource use.
  • Strengthen the climate resilience of departmental services, activities, and assets to mitigate climate-related risks such as floods and infrastructure damage.
  • Monitor and disclose environmental performance data (GHG emissions, waste management, water use) and collaborate across departments to share best practices and innovations.
  • Develop, update, and implement departmental plans (e.g., sustainable development strategies, real property and fleet management plans) to align operations with the Government of Canada’s greening objectives.
