Shortcut:
bilingual

Options:

  1. Have content appear in both official languages on the same page.
  2. Create the page in one official language and include an interlanguage link to a nearly equivalent or exactly equivalent page in the other official language.
  3. Use <multilang> so that the language of the content is dependent on the user's language preferences.

1. Both official languages on the same page

The {{Two column fr-en}} template creates a simple two column layout for pages that are bilingual. As coded the English column is on the left and the French column is on the right. However, this can be changed by changing the order of the code if you prefer French on left and English on right.

How to: Follow the instructions on the {{Two column fr-en}} template page.

Examples: Clerk of the Privy Council, Wayne G. Wouters' Userpage | CCO Applying Leading-Edge Technology Working Group

2. Two separate pages connected by an interlanguage link

Interlanguage links are links from any page in one official language to one or more nearly equivalent or exactly equivalent pages in the other official language. Adding the interlanguage link code will position the interlanguage link above the search box in the left sidebar of the page.

To add an interlanguage link to a French page on an English page:

[[fr:Name of French page]]

To add an interlanguage link to an English page on a French page:

[[en:Name of English page]]

Examples: Help:Getting Started - Aide:Pour commencer | Procurement community - Communauté de l'approvisionnement

3. Language of content dependent on the user's language preferences

The <multilang> tag is used for selective text display depending on user language settings. The language of the content is dependent on the user's language preferences. Small parts of texts like in templates (where you are forced to use exactly the same template name) can efficiently and easily be made multilingual using the <multilang> tag.
