Ranjana Sharma

Dr. Ranjana Sharma

Chief Scientist, Natural Resources Canada

As the department’s Chief Scientist, Dr. Ranjana Sharma is the senior-most scientific authority in Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), accountable for providing corporate science leadership, oversight and strategic policy advice on all aspects of cross-cutting science priorities, policies, capacity and management.

Dr. Sharma holds a Ph.D. in Plant Molecular Physiology and has over 20 years of experience in science-based organizations and the science policy sector. She started her research career at the University of Alberta and joined the public service as a research scientist at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) in 2003.




José Ribas Fernandes

Technical Specialist, Open Government, Canada Energy Regulator

José Ribas Fernandes is a settler from Portugal, father of twins, and was trained as a medical doctor (MD from Universidade de Lisboa, 2006), and as an academic researcher in cognitive neuroscience (PhD in Biology and Neurosciences, from Universidade Nova de Lisboa, 2013). He conducted research at Princeton University (2008-2013) and University of Victoria (2013-2018) in the neural anatomy of decision making. After academia, he briefly worked in a behavioral economics consulting company, BEworks, and has been at the Canada Energy Regulator since 2019, and has worked in data science, equity, diversity, and inclusion, and currently works in Reconciliation in information management.




Stéphane Crête

Assistant Director, Centre for Statistical and Data Standards, Statistics Canada

Stéphane Crête works as a Assistant Director for the Centre for Statistical and Data Standards at Statistics Canada. Since joining the department in the late 90s, he has held a number of positions working on IT systems and architecture covering many statistical domains such as business surveys and the system of national accounts. As a data standards architect, Stéphane is a vocal advocate for the adoption of standards including those for data exchange and metadata management. He also plays a key role in their implementation across various data domains within Statistics Canada. In his free time, Stéphane enjoys exploring new technologies and staying up-to-date with the latest developments in the field. He is passionate about the role that data standards play in advancing technology and improving business-related statistical capabilities.

Christopher Valiquet

Christopher Valiquet

Director, GC Data Community, Canada School of Public Service

Christopher Valiquet is the founding Director of the Government of Canada Data Community at the Canada School of Public Service. He is dedicated to building connections and solutions that help the federal public service to harness data for better decisions and operations. Prior to this, he served as Senior Advisor at the Privy Council Office, where he supported the Prime Minister, Cabinet and the Clerk in navigating transition, setting priorities, making policy and tracking implementation. Christopher began his public service career at the Office of the Auditor General over eighteen years ago. He then held progressively senior positions at Treasury Board Secretariat and Natural Resources Canada. His work has focused on a range of activities to improve economic competitiveness, environmental performance, social outcomes and the efficiency of government. Christopher earned his BA (Honours) in International Development from the University of Guelph, and his MA in Public Policy and Administration from Concordia University.
