This table provides instructions on how to code different character positions in field 008 for names except in the case of name-title series. It specifies, amongst other things, in which circumstances it is necessary to modify the default value supplied by the system when a record is created using the feature "Create Record".

11 Subject heading system/thesaurus v - Répertoire de vedettes-matière Change the default value to "n – Not applicable" when the authorized access point is:
  • the name of a fictitious person
  • a family name established according to chapter 10 of RDA
  • a corporate name that represents a dignitary (head of state, head of government, etc., head of an international intergovernmental organization, religious dignitary or pope) and the name of the title holder is part of the authorized access point (ex. : Église catholique. Pape (1958-1963 : Jean XXIII))
  • a past name of a jurisdiction that has changed names (when the territorial identity remains essentially unchanged).

14 Heading use-main or added entry
a - Heading appropriate for main or added entry
Do not change the default value.
15 Heading use-subject added entry
a - Heading appropriate as subject added entry
Change the default value to "b – Heading not appropriate as subject added entry" when the authorized access point is:
  • the name of a fictitious person
  • a family name established according to chapter 10 of RDA
  • a corporate name that represents a dignitary (head of state, head of government, etc., head of an international intergovernmental organization, religious dignitary or pope) and the name of the title holder is part of the authorized access point (ex. : Église catholique. Pape (1958-1963 : Jean XXIII))
  • a past name of a jurisdiction that has changed names (when the territorial identity remains essentially unchanged).

Note: When the value is "b", the authority record must contain a field 667 that starts with "UTILISATION COMME VEDETTE-MATIÈRE : Ce point d'accès ne peut pas être employé comme vedette-matière" (see 667 Field Examples).

Note: When a record is derived from a bibliographique record, the default value is ' ' - Not a government agency for a person or family.

Usedefault value texte or change it to the appropriate value (for a person or a family, the appropriate value is always ' ')::

a - Autonomous or semi-autonomous component

c - Multilocal

f - Federal/national

i - International intergovernmental

l - Local

m - Multistate

o - Government agency-type undetermined

s - State, provincial, territorial, dependent, etc.

u - Unknown if heading is government agency

z - Other

29 Reference evaluation n - Not applicable If the record contains 4XX and 5XX fields, change the default value to "a – Tracings are consistent with heading".

Exception: If the record contains one or more 4XX fields in non latin script, change the default value to "b – Tracings are not necessarily consistent with heading".

Note: When the value is "b", the authority record must have a field 667 containing one or the other of the following phrases:

  • Le renvoi en écriture non latine n'a pas été évalué.
  • Les renvois en écriture non latine n'ont pas été évalués.
31 Record update in process a - Record can be used In general, do not change the default value.
32 Undifferentiated personal name a - Differentiated personal name If the authorized access point is represented by a personal name, do not change the default value (it must be ensured, however, that the authorized access point is unique).

Change the value to "n - Not applicable" when:

  • field 1XX does not represent a personal name
  • the personal name is a family name (field 100, value 3 in the first indicator).
33 Level of establishment a - Fully established In general, do not change the default value; consult the Standards Committee before using the value "d"». See the Manual for more information.
38 Modified record ' ' - Not modified Do not change the default value.
39 Cataloging source ' ' - National bibliographic agency LAC and BAnQ: Do not change the default value.

Other participants: Change the value to "c - Cooperative cataloguing program".
