Overview

Soil-Vegetation-Snow is a land surface scheme developed and maintained at the Canadian Centre for Meteorological and Environmental Prediction (CCMEP) at Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

Versions

SVS 1.0

The scientific documentation of SVS 1.0 is available here. The model is also described in Alavi et al. (2016) and Husain et al. (2016). The snowpack scheme used in SVS 1.0 is described in Leonardini et al. (2021).

Note that the scientific documentation referenced above can be useful to understand the general structure of SVS. However, it refers to one of the first SVS versions and contains outdated information in terms of many equations is uses now. Until new documentation is released, this file describes the SVS 1.0 prognostic variables (i.e., the state variables calculated by SVS, which are also required to run the model).

This linked document demonstrates the spatial and vertical discretization used in SVS 1.0.

SVS 2.0

SVS 2.0 is under active development, though is available for collaboration to our partners. Enhancements include a multi-layer snow-scheme and the representation of thermal diffusion along the soil column to represent freeze/thaw processes.
