ISEO 2020 is now in full swing!

For ISEO 2020 we are focusing on providing increased supports and resources for students. Some of the events happening this year will be:

  • Mentorship activities
  • Network activities
  • Indigenous students can now self-register to our initiative (inclusive to students hired through FSWEP, co-op and casual hires)
  • Engagement with students through the GCTools suite

The Indigenous Student Employment Opportunity (ISEO) is a national recruitment initiative for students who self-declare as Aboriginal under the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP). The initiative features an onboarding process, training, activities, and support services designed for both students and managers/supervisors. We offer these services in-line with our 4 pillars: Recruitment, Orientation & Onboarding, Learning & Development, and Retention.

Why hire an Indigenous student?

A manager that hires Indigenous students can expect:

  • To contribute to an improved Indigenous awareness overall in the workforce
  • In remote settings, local Indigenous employees are more likely to remain in the community and in the job than employees who are not experienced with the challenges of living and working remotely
  • Improved productivity
  • Improved quality of work
  • Skill gaps reduced
  • Improved employee equity and inclusion
  • Community benefits of higher employment rates and income levels, etc.
  • Indigenous workers act as role models in their communities
  • Better relationship and integration with the local community

How can I request a Indigenous student for my team?

Through the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP), you can make a specific request for an Indigenous Student by selecting Aboriginal under the Employment Equity option on the form: click here to get started. Once their work term is over, you may prolong your student employee’s contract through FSWEP should you wish. Your team’s performance is enhanced by its diversity, so let’s remove this barrier together.

How can I re-hire my student?

To re-hire students originally hired through the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP), Post-Secondary Co-op/Internship Program or Research Affiliate Program.

1. Contact your HR advisor for your department's requirements for re-hiring students.

2. Check that they continue to meet student eligibility criteria

3. Inform the Aboriginal Centre of Expertise (ACE) when you hire your selected student. This helps to keep providing important services and resources to your student.

4. Onboard your new recruit. Don’t forget to refer to the For Managers tab for best practices for onboarding and other valuable tools for your recruit! For information about students hiring, please consult the Federal Student Work Experience Program ─ Information for managers for information.
