Our Goals
The Public Service Commission is launching a Canada-wide selection process that aims to recruit the very best talent in data science. Data scientists in the federal government use data to identify and solve complex business problems. For example, they might:
- Clean, process, and explore structured and unstructured data to extract actionable insights for making business decisions
- Build statistical models using techniques such as econometrics, machine learning, and predictive analysis
- Use an evolving range of data analysis tools and techniques, including open source
Our workplaces have temporary or permanent measures in place to ensure the health and safety of employees as well as the continuity of operations. You will be able to discuss these measures and other workplace flexibilities such as telework and work location with the hiring manager for a specific job opportunity.

Estimated Timeline for Data Scientist Post-Secondary Recruitment Process*
Note: The timeline is only an estimate and can be subject to change during the assessment process.
November 2022
- Candidates apply online HERE (link to poster) between November 2 and 30, 2022.
- Information sessions are offered during the month of November 2022 (see above for dates and links to registration forms).
December 2022 to January 2023
- Pre-screening phase: answers to screening questions will be evaluated by human ressources advisors and subject matter experts. Candidates must meet all essential Education and Experience qualifications.
February to March 2023
- An at-home written exam will be sent to candidates by email who were successful at the pre-screening phase. The exam will evaluate technical competencies related to data science and behavioral competencies. The following four competencies will be assessed:
--Ability to communicate effectively in writing; --Ability to work effectively with others; --Analytical thinking; --Ability to uphold privacy standards and code of ethics;
April to May 2023
- Candidates who passed the written exam will be invited to matching events with hiring managers. Hiring managers will conduct interviews during these matching events.
Our Goals
The Public Service Commission is launching a Canada-wide selection process that aims to recruit the very best talent in data science. As a data scientist in the Government of Canada, you will:
- Participate in the definition, development and implementation of a data science program that clearly establishes the opportunities for the use of internal and scientific data; design and implement projects to enhance and facilitate the use of internal and scientific data by internal and external users.
- Provide advice and mentoring to GC staff on internal and scientific data analysis and related activities in support of the mandate; maintain industry and academic data science practices and standards documents.
- Conduct studies to identify strengths, opportunities, weaknesses and areas for improvement in the GC’s use and management of data and make recommendations to management or other stakeholders on new data exploitation approaches, initiatives and projects.
- Lead or participate on project teams to develop and implement new or modified programs, services or products for data exploitation.
