On August 27, 2010 the technical gnomes behind GCpedia enabled a new feature that allows you to customize how you interact with GCpedia. Without getting too technical, GCpedia now has custom user javascripts enabled, which means that any user can now create a subpage of their user page that contains javascripts that change how GCpedia performs on a user-by-user basis. Check out what Wikipedia has to say about custom javascripts and why you may want to use them.
At this point, we're testing out some custom javascripts that we find helpful; you may have seen traces of one of them in the past few weeks in recent changes - HotCat. HotCat is a javascript that changes (for the better) how a user adds, removes, or modifies the categories that are associated with a page. See the documentation for more information about this javascript.
For more information about how to use custom javascript on GCpedia, we recommend two pages:
- Wikipedia:WikiProject User scripts, which is a Wikipedia resource about custom scripts, and;
- GCpedia:User scripts, which is a GCpedia page that will be used to document how to use javascripts and a list of scripts that we recommend.
For a list of the custom scripts that have been developed for use on Wikipedia, see Wikipedia:Scripts. Many of these scripts can be adapted for use on GCpedia with a little work. The Web 2.0 Program Office cannot offer technical assistance for the use of javascript by users, so proceed boldly and cautiously.
