GOC Innovation through Creative Writing is an initiative established by Justin Patrick on June 13, 2017 that provides Government of Canada employees and external stakeholders with an opportunity to communicate innovative ideas and perspectives through creative writing. While the initiative's main base of operations are on its GCconnex group, it also has a GCcollab group called Creative Writers that is accessible to the public.
Purpose
The initiative's main purpose is to encourage the proliferation of new ideas through creative mediums, as this allows for more qualitative information including feelings, experiences, fictional simulations, thought experiments, and other aspects of creative expression. It also offers more intrinsic benefits to members looking to develop their creative writing skills, participate in resulting discussions, provide feedback on others' works, and publish their creative pieces in a welcoming and inclusive environment.
Content
The initiative's content usually relates to the Public Service and illustrates an idea, raises awareness about an issue, or provides qualitative experiential knowledge that would not otherwise be measured by usual reporting methods.
There are no length or structure requirements, leaving lots of opportunity for creativity. Group members have produced short stories, poems, creative non-fiction, and on the GCcollab group, even a video montage to express a member's view of an abstract concept.
