Recruitment

Assessment

  • The PSC is collaborating with supported employment associations and agencies to source and assess candidate interns
  • The selection of qualified candidates will be done through a competency-based assessment process
  • Pre-assessed
  • Integration

  • We recommend meeting with your intern before their first day of work, if possible, and introduce them informally to their new work environment.
  • Talk to your intern to ensure you understand their accommodation needs and that their workplace is ready before their first day of work. This may include contacting the Accessibility, Accommodation and Adaptive Computer Technology team at Shared Services Canada.
  • Work with the association that recommended the intern to help you better understand what is needed to help the intern integrate into their new role.
  • Work with your intern on a development plan that includes orientation sessions, regular feedback, learning with the Canada School of Public Service, coaching and mentoring opportunities, and FIPCD networking and events.
  • Make a point of checking in with your intern often to assess how they are integrating, and determine whether they need assistance, which includes accommodations.
  • Note: Costs for workplace accommodation are the responsibility of the host department or organization.

    Development

  • Implement the developmental plan, discussed and agreed upon in the previous step, with your intern.
  • Meet with your intern to discuss their progress and provide feedback on a regular basis
  • Establish and implement a performance management agreement.
  • Retention

  • Inform your intern of employment decisions within your current team, and/or assist them to learn how to apply elsewhere before the end of the internship. You may also redirect them to communities that help employees learn to find work within the public service, such as the Federal Youth Network and the National Managers’ Community, for example.
  • Let us know what happens to your intern at the end of their placement.
  • Ongoing

  • Work with your departmental financial advisor and ours to ensure that the PSC can bill you on a half-yearly cycle to recover your portion of the salary costs.
  • Provide us with feedback so that we can continually improve the program. Share your experience, lessons learned and best practices with us!
  • Within your team, create opportunities to have discussions on accessibility topics.
  • Keep in touch with the program by informing us as soon as possible of any changes that affect you or your intern’s participation during the internship.
