Take Me With You
🚪 Ever feel like the real conversations happen behind closed doors?
Many employees want to understand how decisions are made, how their work fits into the bigger picture, and take on learning opportunities to enable them to grow professionally. That’s where “Take Me With You” (TMWY) initiative is a great opportunity to take your career into your own hands and take advantage of accessible and free learning opportunities to strengthen your skillsets, network with colleagues and leadership, and take part in mentorship and shadow opportunities.
💡 What is TMWY?
“Take Me With You” is a movement that encourages all interested employees to ask their managers and peers to attend meetings that relate to their interests, career development goals, and to the files they are working on. It also goes the other way, where management is encouraged to invite more junior staff with them to meetings, where appropriate. TMWY has previously been adopted by various departments/agencies and continues to grow across the GC.
A horizontal initiative spreading across the Government of Canada, TMWY invites employees to attend meetings with management—whether formally or informally—to:
- Break down silos
- Share knowledge
- Build mentorship opportunities
- Empower career development
Whether you're new to the public service or a seasoned pro, TMWY is for everyone.
- Take me with you is an initiative that encourages employees at all levels to attend meetings that relate to their interests, career development goals, and the files they're working on.
- Take me with you helps to foster employee engagement, empowerment and performance, and facilitate the mobilization of talent, and on-the-job knowledge transfer.
- Take me with you helps employees:
- Understand where your work fits within the bigger picture and contributes to the success of the Agency;
- Work more efficiently through broader sharing of information and knowledge; and
- Enhance your career development through expanding your networks, breaking down silos, and giving you greater ownership of your work.
- Take me with you does not:
- Provide an all access pass to every meeting you want to attend;
- Excuse you from your own work and deliverables; or
- Have to be offered to every employee. Circumstances may prevent offering or participating in a TMWY experience.

- What meetings could help you grow?
- Which files or projects do you want to learn more about?
- How can you ask your manager to “Take Me With You”?
📣 Managers & Leaders: You’re Invited Too!
Support your team by:
- Inviting employees to meetings related to their work or interests
- Recognizing contributions in front of senior leadership
- Creating a culture of openness and inclusion
- With less resources and reduced budget across the GC, “doing more with less” is easier when everyone is at the table and can contribute as it reduces silos and enhances efficiencies.
🛠️ How to Start
Formally: Some departments have embedded TMWY into their governance—ask your department's professional network or the FYN if yours has!
Informally: Just ask! A simple “Can I join you for that meeting?” can open doors. The flip side is also essential to the success of the program, having management invite more junior staff to meetings and join in on conversations and decision-making processes.
