As part of the 2025 Official Languages Symposium, several virtual workshops and information sessions on various topics related to official languages will be offered on Tuesday, November 18, and Friday, November 21. All federal public servants are invited to participate.

From Policy to Practice: Supporting Part VII of the Official Languages Act (OLA) at Health Canada

This presentation will focus on the development and implementation of a policy accompanied by a series of tools to support the application of Part VII of the OLA. It will address, in particular, the development of an impact analysis tool, a checklist for public participation activities, and a tool for monitoring positive measures. The team will also present an overview of the training they offer on Part VII, as well as a preview of a SharePoint collaborative space, currently under development and designed for Health Canada employees, which will be dedicated to Part VII of the OLA.

This presentation explores how artificial intelligence is being used to support official languages in the federal public service. Based on questionnaire results, we’ll highlight emerging trends, current practices, and key challenges and needs identified by respondents. The insights offer a snapshot of how AI is shaping bilingualism and language-related services across federal institutions.

This session will explore the tool’s features and advantages and discuss its strategic role. In addition, it will address the importance of human expertise, data sovereignty and the use of the Translation Bureau’s corpus in training artificial intelligence (AI). The session will also present the resources of the Language Portal of Canada, which are essential complements to the use of AI for translating, writing and editing.

The Public Health Agency of Canada is pleased to host a session on our Official Languages Organizational Maturity Self-Assessment. This tool was designed to assess an organizations readiness to fully integrate OL considerations (particularly those related to Official Language Minority Communities) into the entire cycle of Agency activities, as per the modernized Official Languages Act (OLA), and to identify the next steps in building our capacity to meet or exceed our OLA obligations. The tool is also based on the Official Languages Maturity Model developed by the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages and is used to feed into our annual reporting on Official Languages.

The objective of this session is to explain the complaint process and examine the Commissioner of Official Languages’ new powers—including mediation, investigation summaries, compliance agreements and orders—which can be used to ensure federal institutions’ compliance with the Official Languages Act.

It will also be an opportunity for participants to talk with representatives of the Office of the Commissioner in order to help demystify these new powers and better understand their scope.
