Deputy Minister University Champion (DMUC) Initiative / Initiative des sous-ministres champions des relations universitaires (SMCRU)
Deputy Minister University Champion (DMUC) Initiative | Initiative des sous-ministres champions des relations universitaires (SMCRU) |
Launched in 2002, the Deputy Minister University Champion Initiative is a collaborative effort between universities, which acts as a secretariat, and the Privy Council Office, which appoints the Deputy Minister Champions. By promoting robust and relevant public administration education and research, this program aims to strengthen links between the Government of Canada and Canadian universities, so that the federal public service has access to cutting-edge ideas and theories, as well as a new generation of public administration scholars.
A strengthened relationship with the university sectors can help secure access to the knowledge that emanates from this sector and create benefits for the public service. That way, the public service can fill the need it experiences as it enters a new period of public management reform. The university sector is a great partner since those institutions incorporate the theory and practice of a responsible government with the highest standards of ethics and values.
Deputy Minister University Champions play a key role in Public Service Renewal. They are responsible for building relations between the Public Service of Canada and the various universities in order to identify shared priorities, align and promote relevant research and build awareness of career opportunities in the public service while facilitating the recruitment and branding activities. Deputy Ministers may exercise their role in strengthening relationships between the public service and universities in a variety of ways. However, there are some clear best practices like making appearance at universities to help students understand more their domain of study, learn more about the public service or even to help students build their career. To complete their role, Deputy Ministers need to work in pairs with the university. |

The student ambassador of your university can inform you about the employment opportunities on which you can apply. So do not hesitate to reach out to the student ambassador of your university to learn more about student opportunities in the federal public service. You can find who your Student Ambassador is by using the table below.
While the position of Student Ambassador is not new, the role and tasks of this position are not clearly define since they can be tailored to meet the needs of the student and work with them to accomplish their professional goals. They also change because the mission of the Student Ambassador goes in pairs with the vision of their deputy minister. Every student ambassador support their deputy minister since the task load is too heavy for the deputy to do on his or her own. That way, we can achieve a better partnership with universities. Quote from actual Student Ambassador "Being a student ambassador has meant an amazing opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. It has offered me the chance to grow my leadership and communication skills while building a strong network across different departments and regions within the GC. Beyond these many transferable skills, being a student ambassador has allowed me to share my love and interest in the Federal Public Service with other students at my university. Being able to support current and future students in their journey with the GC just cannot be beat!" - Raegan Scott (Student Ambassador of Acadia University)
