A userbox (commonly abbreviated as UBX) is a small coloured box (see examples to the right) designed to appear only on a GCpedian's user page. Userboxes communicate something about the user, in order to directly (or even indirectly) help GCpedians collaborate more effectively on articles.
Usage
To place a userbox on your user page:
- Look in the gallery and choose a userbox that you want
- Copy the code of the desired userbox (including the wavy brackets on both sides)
- Paste the code somewhere on your userpage and save the page
Note: Some userboxes such as {{useredits}} and {{User GCPEDIAN for}} require you to add additional information (called a parameter). Please see the documentation in the template you want to use for more information.
The templates {{Userboxtop}}, {{Userboxbreak}}, and {{Userboxbreak}} can be used create a simple column for arranging all of your userboxes, neat and tidy.
Building your own
To make a userbox you need to create a new page in the template namespace. You will be using one of three templates that already exist: {{userbox}} (which has no borders), {{userbox2}}, or {{userbox3}} (both of these have borders). Documentation on how to use these templates can be found on their respective pages. Don't forget to add new userboxes to the gallery by going to GCpedia:Userboxes/Gallery (editing this page directly will not allow you to add Userboxes to the gallery).
Example
If you want to make a userbox called "UBXexample" you would put the URL in the box below into your address bar, to create that page:
http://www.gcpedia.gc.ca/wiki/Template:UBXexample
To create a userbox that is white on the left, blue on the right, with a picture of a gnome, and the text "This is a UBXexample", include the following generic code on a page:
{{userbox2|gray|lightblue|[[Image:gnome.png|30px]]|This is a UBXexample.}}
When you save the page, the result will be a template that looks like this:
This is a UBXexample. |
