NEW CABINET
On October 26, the Prime Minister announced the composition of the Cabinet. Ginette Petitpas Taylor became Minister of Official Languages and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and Mona Fortier was appointed Secretary of the Treasury Board.
MODERNIZATION OF THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGES ACT
As you are aware, Bill C-32, An Act for the Substantive Equality of French and English and the Strengthening of the Official Languages Act, was tabled on June 15, 2021.
The mandate letter of the Minister of Official Languages and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency indicates that the Government still expects to reintroduce a bill at the beginning of her mandate:
“Swiftly reintroduce the Act for the Substantive Equality of French and English and the Strengthening of the Official Languages Act by early 2022.”
SPEECH FROM THE THRONE
Her Excellency, The Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada, delivered the Speech from the Throne on November 23, 2021. These are the extracts on official languages:
“Our two official languages are part of who we are.”
“It is essential to support official language minority communities and to protect and promote French, outside and inside Quebec.”
“The Government will reintroduce the proposed Act for the Substantive Equality of French and English and the Strengthening of the Official Languages Act.”
JOURNÉE DE LA DUALITÉ LINGUISTIQUE
La Journée de la dualité linguistique, qui a eu lieu le 9 septembre 2021, a connu un succès sans précédent. En effet, plus de 2 500 personnes ont participé à l’événement. Nous avons également eu plus de 16 000 visites sur le site Web de l’événement et 27 000 impressions des gazouillis du Conseil du Réseau des champions des langues officielles. De plus, le Conseil du Réseau des champions des langues officielles et le Réseau de la dualité linguistique poursuivent activement leurs démarches en vue de la proclamation d’une Journée nationale de la dualité linguistique. Vous trouverez toutes les mises à jour à ce sujet dans les procès-verbaux des réunions du Conseil qui vous sont envoyés par courriel.
GROUPE DE TRAVAIL SUR LE SONDAGE AUPRÈS DES FONCTIONNAIRES FÉDÉRAUX
Saviez-vous que la vice-présidente du Conseil préside un groupe de travail chargé d’examiner les questions du Sondage auprès des fonctionnaires fédéraux (SAFF) portant sur les langues officielles et de formuler des recommandations? En effet, ce groupe de travail composé d’une dizaine d’institutions fédérales a récemment repris ses travaux afin d’examiner les résultats du sondage 2020.
