Introduction
The purpose of this document is to provide an overview of procedures to be followed in the creation of name authority records. It also highlights LAC decisions to align more closely to the requirements of the Name Authority Cooperative Program (NACO). This document provides guidance for staff in the cataloguing section and informs their workflow when using the LC/NACO file.
010 Library of Congress Control Number
This field is mandatory and the number is generated by the system after the authority record is saved.
016 National Bibliographic Agency Control Number
Field 016 is mandatory in all LAC new or revised authority records, regardless of associated place of the entity.
When creating an authority record, and when updating or using an existing record without a Canadiana number in field 016, first check the Internal Name Authorities file and then check the Canadiana file if a Canadiana number has been assigned to the entity. Note that the authorized access point, in the Canadiana file, may be different from the NACO access point.
When updating or using an existing authority record that includes a Canadiana number, please check that the language code E is present at the end of the field.
Do not “reuse” a Canadiana number.
Canadian number generator link. Please be careful, you should generate an authority number, not a bibliographic number. If you have a problem with the generator, contact the Standards and System Team.
