|Michelle Kovacevic was appointed Associate Deputy Minister of Indigenous Services Canada on January 22, 2024. Previously, she served as Senior Assistant Deputy Minister of Federal-Provincial Relations and Social Policy Branch at the Department of Finance. In that role, she was responsible for the administration and oversight of Canada’s major transfers to provinces and territories, including the Canada Health Transfer and Canada Social Transfer, Equalization and Territorial Formula Finance, and the Canada Pension Plan.

Prior to these roles, Michelle has held several senior executive positions at the Public Health Agency of Canada, Health Canada (including the First Nations and Inuit Health Branch) and at Correctional Services Canada.

Her long professional history in the health and social policy space began as a social worker at Saint Michael’s hospital in Toronto, before returning to her hometown of Thunder Bay where she held increasingly senior positions for the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the Ministry of Children Services, and with the Thunder Bay and Champlain Health Councils.

Michelle holds a Master’s of Social Work from Wilfred Laurier University. In her spare time, Michelle is an avid athlete who uses sport as another way to continue giving back to her community. She coaches competitive girls soccer teams and enjoys basketball, hiking and running.
