📝 Annual Reports to Parliament

Annual Reports to Parliament are required under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act. These reports provide a yearly overview of how federal institutions have fulfilled their responsibilities under each Act. They include statistical data and highlight key accomplishments and challenges encountered in administering access to information and privacy programs.

Institutions also use these reports to meet mandatory reporting requirements set by the Treasury Board Secretariat and to demonstrate transparency and accountability to Parliament and the public.

📝 Statistical Reports

Statistical Reports provide detailed data on the administration of the Government of Canada’s access to information and privacy programs. They support oversight, accountability, and transparency by presenting standardized metrics on institutional performance, including request volumes, processing times, and outcomes.

These reports are submitted annually to the Treasury Board Secretariat and help inform evidence-based policy development, program evaluation, and public understanding of how access and privacy rights are being upheld across federal institutions.

Statistics on the Access to Information and Privacy Acts 

Each year, the Treasury Board Secretariat collects and publishes government-wide statistical data on the administration of the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act across federal institutions. This consolidated report supports transparency and oversight by providing a comprehensive view of how these Acts are being implemented nationally.

Info Source is a key transparency tool that supports the administration of the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act. It provides an inventory of information holdings and descriptions of personal information under the control of federal institutions subject to these Acts. This resource helps individuals understand what information is available and how to request access or correction.

Info Source also includes summaries of key Federal Court decisions related to the administration of the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act, and outlines online publishing requirements for institutions. The Treasury Board Secretariat maintains a consolidated list of institutional chapters to support public access and oversight.

-This is further to my message of July 25, 2019 setting out the statistical reporting requirements for the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act for April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2020.
-It has been observed that Table 3.1 Disposition and completion time in the 2019-20 Statistical Report on the Access to Information Act lacked a disposition category to account for requests for which institutions declined to act with the Information Commissioner’s approval, in accordance with section 6.1(1) of the Act.
-This has now been corrected, and a line has been added to Table 3.1 - Disposition and completion time to add “decline to act” as a disposition. No other changes were made to the form. The updated Guide and reporting form are attached.
-The statistical reporting requirements for the Privacy Act remain unchanged. They are attached as well for ease of reference.
