Our Recruitment Process: What To Expect
Step 1: Candidates apply online, completing all screening questions (insert link to poster).
Step 2: Screened-in applicants will be sent an at-home written exam.
Step 3: Candidates who pass the written exam will be invited to an interview.
Step 4: Successful candidates will be asked to provide references and proof of educational credentials.
Result: Successful candidates throughout the entire selection process will be added to a pool of qualified candidates. They may be referred to various departments and agencies from across the public service for data scientist positions.

Estimated Timeline for Data Scientist Post-Secondary Recruitment Process*
November 2022
- Candidates apply online HERE (link to poster) between November 2 and 30, 2022.
- Four information sessions during the month of November 2022 (see above for dates and links to registration forms).
December 2022 to January 2023
- Pre-screening phase: answers to screening questions will be evaluated (must meet all essential qualifications).
February to March 2023
- Take-home written exam will be sent to candidates who were successful in the pre-screening phase. The exam will evaluate technical competencies related to data science and behavioral competencies.
April to May 2023
- Candidates who passed the written exam will be invited to matching events with hiring managers. Hiring managers will conduct interviews during these matching events.

Our Goals
The Public Service Commission is launching a Canada-wide selection process that aims to recruit the very best talent in data science. As a data scientist in the Government of Canada, you will:
- Participate in the definition, development and implementation of a data science program that clearly establishes the opportunities for the use of internal and scientific data; design and implement projects to enhance and facilitate the use of internal and scientific data by internal and external users.
- Provide advice and mentoring to GC staff on internal and scientific data analysis and related activities in support of the mandate; maintain industry and academic data science practices and standards documents.
- Conduct studies to identify strengths, opportunities, weaknesses and areas for improvement in the GC’s use and management of data and make recommendations to management or other stakeholders on new data exploitation approaches, initiatives and projects.
- Lead or participate on project teams to develop and implement new or modified programs, services or products for data exploitation.
Our workplaces have temporary or permanent measures in place to ensure the health and safety of employees as well as the continuity of operations.
