Welcome to the Environmental Management Branch (EMB)
The Environmental Management Branch (EMB) leads the department’s efforts in promoting sustainability and environmental responsibility across its operations, assets, and procurement activities.
Our team is committed to implementing initiatives that support the federal government’s Greening Government Strategy and achieving Net-Zero and climate-resilient operations. We work in collaboration with sectors and employees across the department to foster a culture of environmental stewardship.
Our Mandate
The EMB is responsible for leading the department’s environmental programs and initiatives, ensuring compliance with federal policies, and supporting the transition towards climate-resilient, sustainable operations.
Our Key Activities
Green Procurement
- Lead the implementation of the departmental Green Procurement strategy.
- Set targets and report on progress.
- Promote environmentally preferable goods and services to support responsible and sustainable purchasing decisions.
Employee Engagement and Environmental Awareness
- Organize departmental events related to Greening Government Operations and environmental stewardship.
- Promote awareness campaigns and deliver training to encourage environmentally responsible practices across all sectors.
Emissions Reporting
- Oversee the implementation and training of the department’s Emissions Reporting Software.
- Track and report on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from:
- The fleet of vehicles
- The department’s real property assets
- Ensure emission reduction targets are met and aligned with Canada’s climate commitments.
Climate Resilience and Net-Zero
- Lead the implementation of the departmental Net-Zero Climate-Resilient Real Property Portfolio Plan.
- Assess climate risks to departmental assets.
- Develop mitigation strategies.
- Report on progress in achieving the Plan’s outcomes, ensuring operations and infrastructure are climate-resilient and support the Net-Zero goal.
