The monitoring of official languages is primarily carried out through the collection of information and data obtained using the annual Official Languages Review Exercise, the results of the Public Service Employee Survey, the language designation of federal offices and service points [https://www.canada.ca/en/treasury-board-secretariat/services/values-ethics/official-languages/public-services/burolis.html (Burolis)], as well as official languages data on workforce.

The annual Official Languages Review Exercise gathers information on the state of official languages in federal institutions and includes the collection of official languages data on workforce (resources providing service to the public, resources providing personal and central services, bilingual capacity on supervision positions who supervise employees located in a bilingual region for language-of-work purposes, and the first official language of staff). The collected information is used to write the annual reports on official languages from the Treasury Board and Canadian Heritage, which are tabled to Parliament.
