FYN In Person Learning Days

Description

The Federal Youth Network (FYN) will be hosting in-person learning events again in 2024/2025. These full-day events will allow participants to learn about career development with tangible examples and experience sharing on a variety of topics. There will also be ample opportunities built in for networking.

Over the course of the day, learners will:

  • assess your skills, interests, and values to identify potential career paths;
  • learn how to effectively prepare for interviews in order to gain success in the job application process
  • gain knowledge of various social media platforms and their relevance to landing your dream job; and
  • recognize the significance of networking in career advancement and job search success.

Time: 8:30 am to 4:30 pm

Discovering Your Career Path: Self-Reflection and Exploration

Description: Embark on a journey of self-discovery and career exploration in this engaging 90-minute workshop. Through a combination of lecture-style presentations, interactive activities, and insightful discussions, participants will better understand themselves and make authentic professional choices that build on their strengths, skills, preferences, and values.


Objectives:

  1. Understand the importance of self-reflection in career planning
  2. Unlock the secrets of their personality type and its relevance to career choices
  3. Learn tips and resources for professional opportunities
  4. Differentiate between strengths and skills and assess their own
  5. Apply self-awareness to explore potential career paths and opportunities
Preparing for Assessments and Interviews in a Selection Process

Description: Participants will learn strategic tips that will assist them during the selection process, including requesting accommodations, preparing for tests, and mastering interview techniques. Gain valuable insights and practical tips to confidently navigate every stage of the selection process and secure your desired position.


Objectives:

  1. Understand when and how to appropriately make accommodation requests.
  2. Identify the various types of testing commonly used and implement strategies to prepare for them.
  3. Develop strategies to prepare for interviews.
  4. Apply the STAR method effectively to structure responses to interview questions.
Unlocking Opportunities: Social Media Strategies for Your Job Search

Objectives:

  1. Review the traditional job application process and how this can lead to a promotion or appointment
  2. Review the ways you can use social media in your job search - primarily LinkedIn and Facebook
  3. Highlight green flags and red flags for hiring managers when posting to social media
  4. Establish best practices in using social media for job searches in keeping with the GC’s values and ethics
Speed Mentoring - in-person

Description: Our most popular session, speed mentoring, connects public servants of all levels with knowledgeable and insightful GC leaders for networking and mentoring.


Objectives: During this session, mentors will get an opportunity to share their advice with and answer questions from mentees related to career development, work-life balance, and the inner workings of the Government of Canada. Mentees will be able to ask questions to and seek advice from mentors on the topics that matter most to them as they advance their careers.
