Tackling Complex Societal Challenges Through Mission-Oriented Innovation Policies

Mission-oriented innovation policies mobilize science, technology, and innovation to tackle complex societal challenges by setting ambitious goals and then taking a systematic approach to achieving them.

This event will feature a presentation on Mission Forward: Forging New Frontiers in Mission-Oriented Innovation Policies, a recent report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The presentation will be followed by a series of international case studies highlighted in the report, and a discussion on the resulting best practices for enabling mission-oriented innovation policies.

Participants will gain practical insights into how mission-oriented approaches can be applied to address pressing challenges, both globally and domestically.  This event will be of particular interest to managers and policy practitioners who are interested in learning more about mission-oriented innovation policies as levers to deliver on the Government of Canada’s mandate.

Clarity Over Complexity - Leading Simplification in the Public Service

Public service leaders are being asked to simplify as expectations rise and priorities constantly shift, yet complexity continues to grow. The result: slower decisions, reduced engagement, and more time spent navigating processes instead of delivering outcomes.

Most complexity isn’t designed, it’s created through unclear priorities, stalled decisions, and inconsistent communication.

In this panel, we’ll explore how leaders can reduce complexity by strengthening three critical disciplines: clarity, communication, and decision-making.

Opportunities to Participate in a Coaching Circle and Co-development Group

More than ever, managers need free access to safe, supportive spaces where they can learn and tackle real-world challenges together. This month, the National Managers’ Community (NMC) is promoting two peer-support initiatives: co-development groups (Quebec Region only) and peer coaching circles (nationally).

Both groups bring together managers from various departments and agencies, guided by trained lead facilitators, to support a peer in addressing real professional challenges. They share common principles—confidentiality, respect, and collective learning—but differ in their approach:

🔹 Co-development takes a mentoring approach. Participants ask questions and offer advice based on their experience, with a focus on reflection and shared learning. Sessions last 3 hours per month (October to June).

🔹 Peer coaching circles follow a coaching approach. Participants ask open-ended questions to help the “coachee” clarify their situation, reflect deeply, and find their own solutions. This process fosters awareness and empowerment. Sessions last 1 hour every 4 to 6 weeks (September to June).

Interested in growing with your peers? Register now:
