What is Activity Based Working (ABW)?

  • Concept: provide employees with a mix of work settings for different activities.
  • · In 1983, Robert Luchetti (American architect) co-invented the idea of creating 'activity settings' for a variety of tasks.

In ABW workplaces

  • No assigned workstation.
  • You decide how and with whom to collaborate and which tools to use.
  • You choose the setting for each activity, e.g. learning, focusing, collaborating, socialising.


Culture change

This is a culture change for the Public Service that, to be successful, requires integrating People, Technology and Space.

  • People:

Impacts business processes, behaviour, attitude, organisational changes, training, human resource policies.

o  ABW is based on work output, fostering trust between employers and employees.

o  You are empowered by having increased control and more flexibility in where and how you work.

o  Improved morale; motivates team building and teamwork.

  • Technology:

o  Updated information management systems, self-service tools, Wi-Fi, mobile devices, videoconferencing, document sharing.

o  Supports mobile, collaborative and remote working.

o   Technology is adapted to each group’s requirements, work styles, organizational needs.

  • Space:

o  Changes the building, interior design, furnishings.

o  Based on an assessment of work activities and the organization's programs and culture.

o  Various types of workspaces for different activities, e.g. confidential phone call, working with a small group, videoconferencing.

o  Supports collaboration, flexibility, mobility and green ways of working.

o  Includes spaces for eating a meal and relaxing.

o  With no designated office, a securable locker or personal storage system is available.
