About Innovation Canada’s IP CoE

• As part of the National Intellectual Property (IP) Strategy, the IP CoE was launched to provide strategic advice within the federal government on program design and policy guidance related to IP, including leading-edge intelligence and data analysis.

• The IP CoE collaborates with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) to provide IP training to federal officials.

IP CoE workshops

• Leveraging its advice to Innovation Canada’s flagship programs, the IP CoE is engaging with an initial cohort of federal departments and agencies that offer a number of programs and services with IP components.

• This initial engagement is allowing the IP CoE to gather information on the IP needs and gaps within these organizations. The initial cohort includes:
  • Department of National Defence
  • Natural Resources Canada
  • Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada
  • Canadian Space Agency
  • National Research Council
• The IP CoE will also engage with a second cohort of organizations for evidence gathering, such as Global Affairs Canada, Heritage Canada, Treasury Board Secretariat, Public Services and Procurement Canada, and Sustainable Development Technology Canada, including with their program officials.
• The IP CoE is gathering intelligence about IP generally within each organization, in particular:
  • Programs and services with IP components
  • Current approaches to IP
  • Level of IP knowledge and expertise of federal officials
  • Existing IP best practices.
• The data collected will inform the IP CoE’s program design. Furthermore, it will lead to the refinement of the IP CoE’s products and service offerings to federal organizations to address key IP needs and gaps.
