Best practices when ending your student contract with the Government of Canada (GC)
Do not forget:
- After your first student job at GC, you can network to find another student job at GC. See our wiki page for more information.
- GC student workers who have previously been hired through a Public Service Commission (PSC) recognized student recruitment program, either the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP), CO-OP placements or the Research Affiliate Program are eligible for Student Bridging upon graduation. This type of process is unannounced and external and is found by networking. See our wiki page for more information.
Discussion with your manager
- Take the initiative! Invite them to a meeting or send them an email.
- Let him/her know that you are interested in staying on his/her team.
- Give them ideas for projects or tasks you could do next term.
Talk to hiring managers
- Join Facebook groups to network with hiring managers (use our template to create your post).
- Find hiring managers on LinkedIn or GCdirectory.
Take the initiative!
- Research your department/agency intranet for steps to follow when your contract ends. Look for "Separation", "Departure", "Off boarding" or "Departure".
- To ease your transition, consider drafting an email or document to help your colleagues understand your tasks and locate the documents and resources you were using.
- Make sure to save all your documents you are working on in a folder that your colleagues will have access to (SharePoint).
- Make sure you have a copy of your latest student contract (letter of offer) at the GC.
- Make sure you know your Personal File Identifier (CIDP/PRI) and security clearance (usually on your letter of offer).
- If you have had official language assessments, make sure you have a copy of your results (reading, writing, oral).
- Make sure you know how to keep a copy of your MyKey (digital fingerprint).
- Be sure to keep a copy of your work plans.
- If you want to keep the door open to return to this team in the near future, make that clear!
- Send a message to your colleagues to inform them of your departure and leave a good last impression.
- DO NOT FORGET! These could be good references for your future jobs!
